This spring, Governor Corbett and elected leaders in Harrisburg will make critical decisions about the vital services that home care attendants provide to seniors and people with disabilities in our state. Our Declaration of Independence
After many years of struggling with inadequate services and invisibility to elected officials, Consumers, Attendants and Taxpayers now declare our independence. We want to live good lives in our community, free from poverty, sickness, insecurity, and over-taxation that undermine our quality of life.
Seniors and people with disabilities must have the same opportunities to pursue life, liberty and happiness as anyone else. This means rebalancing our system from one centered on nursing homes to one centered on people’s homes, and developing a qualified, sustainable workforce to support community living.
Attendants who support people in their homes and communities likewise have the right to a decent life, liberty, and happiness. This means livable wages, affordable health care, and the right to organize and advocate on their own behalf.
If Pennsylvania fails to make reasonable investments in home and community based services, taxpayers will be forced to support seniors and people with disabilities in expensive nursing homes. Politicians undermine middle class families and their communities when they slash the very services that save us money. Supporting consumers in their homes and the attendants who care for them is prudent policy.
We stand together as seniors, people with disabilities, attendants and tax-paying Pennsylvanians because our happiness and independence are bound together. We call upon our Governor and legislature to fund home and community services, compensate attendants fairly, and free taxpayers of the burden of supporting our aging population in costly facilities.
